Description

Aliskiren is the first in a new class of medications that inhibits a harmful hormone released by the kidney known as renin. So far, it has been approved for the treatment of high blood pressure (or hypertension), but there may be some role for aliskiren in the future for the treatment of kidney disease and chronic or congestive heart failure. Due to it being relatively new, aliskiren is not considered first line treatment for high blood pressure due to strong clinical data with some older, more established drugs although this could change in the future.
