Sometimes it’s hard to know what questions to ask. Here are some questions that other patients have had:
- How does an ICD work? Will it fix my heart rhythm problem?
- How invasive will this procedure be? Is it worth it for me?
- How will we decide how the ICD should be implanted (under the muscle or just under the skin)?
- What are the major risks or possible harms of having an ICD?
- How will the area where I have the ICD implanted look after?
- Will I be able to be as active as before my ICD? Will I be able to play sports?
- Can I travel safely?
- Will getting an ICD affect my ability to have children?
- Can you tell me about the different types of ICDs/makers and which might be better for me and why?
- What will a shock feel like? Does it hurt?
- If someone touches me when I get shocked, will they be hurt?
- When should I call you?
- How often will my ICD be checked to make sure it’s working properly? How will we know when it or the battery needs to be replaced?
- What if I change my mind after having an ICD placed?
- How will an ICD affect tests and treatments I may need for other health conditions?
- Are there any support groups for people with ICDs?
- Will the ICD and ongoing care be covered by my health insurance? Are there other costs I should be aware of?
